Bargain Bin: Purple Shampoo

Being a blonde is hard.

It’s not only dealing with the dryness from constant bleaching — there’s also the maintenance of keeping it bright and non-brassy. Typically, that means adding in a purple shampoo to your routine, which helps combat the yellow tones in the hair.

Everyone seems to have their own favorite, whether it’s the tried and true Shimmer Lights or the pricier Tigi’s Dumb Blonde. Personally, I’ve switched between John Frieda’s Color Renew and Lee Stafford’s Bleach Blonde. But, with both of those options becoming harder and harder to find in stores, I’ve been on the hunt for a new one.

The other day in Wal-Mart I found a surprising option: Jhirmack Silver Plus Ageless Shampoo.

The shampoo — designed for women with gray hair — is a deep purple color. It promises to help keep hair ageless and silver. It’s made for older women, but it’s great for blondes too, since it’s purple color tones the yellow out (I promise!). Plus, at $3, it’s a much more affordable option than some of the others on the market.

After debating it for a minute, and deciding all I have to lose is $3 and change, I bought it. And I’m glad I did. It has a lovely floral smell and works up a good lather. I’ve used it about 3 times so far, and I can tell the brassiness (that was really bad before) is going away.

Keep in mind that since the shampoo is toning your hair, it is slightly drying. I plan on using this as my main shampoo — since I only wash my hair 3-4 times a week and I’m combating some serious brass right now — and following up with a deep conditioner like this one (a personal favorite).

Overall, I think it’s a good find — especially since it costs less than your Starbucks.
